"It is well to read everything of something, and something of everything.
Lord Henry P. Brougham (1778–1868) Lord Chancellor of Britain, founder of the Edinburgh Review
line

"What is success?
To laugh often and much.
To win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children.
To earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends.
To appreciate beauty.
To find the best in others.
To leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch or redeemed social condition.
To know even one life breathed easier because you have lived; this is to have succeeded."

Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803—1882)

Tim Flannery, the author of The Weather Makers: The History and Future Impact of Climate Change, recently posed a provocative question: "Sometime this century, after four billion years, some of Earth’s regulatory systems will pass from control through evolution by natural selection, to control by human intelligence. Will humanity rise to the challenge?" Visit Tim Flannery's website.

Of the "pale blue dot," astronomer Carl Sagan said, "That's here. That's home. That's us. On it everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever was, lived out their lives. The aggregate of our joy and suffering, thousands of confident religions, ideologies, and economic doctrines, every hunter and forager, every hero and coward, every creator and destroyer of civilization, every king and peasant, every young couple in love, every mother and father, hopeful child, inventor and explorer, every teacher of morals, every corrupt politician, every 'superstar,' every 'supreme leader,' every saint and sinner in the history of our species lived there ~ on a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam." >>>more

In 2002, American writer Arden Buck wrote an inspiring essay, What Can We Do Now?: "How can we keep our spirits up and our hearts open in the midst of all this, and what can we do now to make this a better world? ...We can rarely control what life sends our way, but we can control how we respond to it. We can make ourselves miserable, helplessly wishing things were better. Or, we can do everything we can and feel the satisfaction of those efforts -regardless of the outcome." Read his essay here.

When is a Lobbyist Not a Lobbyist?
By Howard Marlowe, President, American League of Lobbyists
Newt Gingrich is a lobbyist. Any way you cut the cake, he was working to influence policy. Under current law, however, Gingrich most likely didn't need to register since he probably didn't spend at least 20% of his time on "covered lobbing activities." If that's the case, Mr. Gingrich joins a few thousand others in this town who are paid to lobby but are not required to register as lobbyists due to gaping holes in the Lobbying Disclosure Act (LDA). Those holes need to be closed. >>>more
